The typical S. tarijensis is only known from the Cuesta de Sama between Tarija and Iscayachi from about 2800 to 3600 m. The variability is fairly small in habitus as well as for the flowers. Reports of S. tarijensis coming from near Villazon seem to be fake. S. tarijensis ssp. samaensis could very well be part of this subspecies.
