Sulcorebutia tiraquensis var. australis form the most southerly branch of the tiraquensis-complex. It was described twice as S. steinbachii v. australis by Rausch and 3 years later by Swoboda as S. mariana. Depending on the taxonomical rank one name or the other has priority. This variety stands out with one of the largest flowers and some of the biggest seeds within the genus.
