Especially the great difference in the seed characters separates this taxon as a good species from Echinocactus xeranthemoides. A name for the yellow – spined form is Echinocactus polycephalus f. flavispinus (Haage ex Quehl) Benson Cact. US. Can.: 951 (1982), but no type specimen is preserved.
