The detailed first description of Quehl based on culture plants of De Leat, Contich. Quehl, however, could not give any information about the actual origin, because this was unknown.
A group of biologists from the University of Monterrey, and a short time later the Fitz Maurices, during their studies on the series Stylothelae, were able to rediscover this species high in the mountains of Aguascalientes near the border to Jalisco.
