Type Locality:
Not exact determined (but probably south-west Arizona). The original description says: 'We collected only one young specimen, probably on the Lower Colorado, from which this description is taken.' 'The stouter central spine is …often almost hooked.' 'The large flowers are deep red, …') etc.

For the red-flowered phase of Ferocactus emoryi the new combination Ferocactus emoryi subsp. covillei Hunt & Dimmitt (2006) was proposed. But obviously the type of F. emoryi itself is of this red flowered phase. It has spines more hooked and comes from a northern location also. So without any significant difference the two types (emoryi and covillei) are synonym.
