Type Locality:
Mexico, Guanajuato, near San Miguel Allende, amongst rock in leaf-mould.
Distribution:
In a side gorge of the Arroyo la Virgin, west of San Miguel Allende. Mostly growing on the southern rockfaces in a layer of moss and fern together with M. densispina, M. aff. polythele and various Tillandsia, Sedum and ferns at 1950 m altitude (Fitz Maurice, 1988).

In 1933 Fr. Bödeker described the species discovered by E. Georgi. Fifty years later, these plants could be rediscovered by W.A. & B. Fitz Maurice (1988). A white-flowering form is often present in culture but not validly described. M. zeilmanniana was voted as 'Cactus of the Year' by the Deutsche Kakteen Gesellschaft in 2015.
