Type Locality:
Bolivia, Dept. Chuquisaca, Oropeza, near Sucre (Co. Churuquella above the Recoleta)
Distribution:
The typical form is known only from Co. Churuquella, but there are countless populations of this species in the vicinity of Sucre. The distribution area extends from Yamparez east of Sucre, to the west and north-west of the city (+/- 20km) alongside the roads to the Rio Cico and to Poroma.

S. canigueralii at the type-location only has bicoloured red and yellow flowers. In many other places, the plants also have flowers with different shades of violet and red. Thus Aylostera zavaletae, S. verticillacantha v. applanata and Weingartia perplexiflora have been included here.
