In a wide area from 5 km north to northeast and about 20 km southeast of Co. Cantar Gallo, between 2300 and more than 3000 m.

This variety is extremely variable. North of Co. Cantar Gallo it grows side by side with S. cantargalloensis v. cantargalloensis forming a great swarm of intermediates (hybrids?). To the east and southeast mostly at lower altitudes there are also relatively uniform populations without obvious similarities with the type species. In contrast to the type species the variety torrepampensis flowers uniformly yellow.
