The first plants discovered in 2004 (HJ1127) were thought to be Aylosteras. Later some of the seedlings grown from collected seed turned out to be Sulcorebutias, 2007 Jucker returned to this place near Kollpa and found Sulcorebutias as well as more to the south in the vicinity of Pirhuani. 2018 a group of sulco enthusiasts even found this species south of Pirhuani. (priv. comm.) reducing the gap between S. tarijensis ssp. and other Sulcos to less than 90 km.
