The typical form of S. purpurea v. purpurea was only found on the pass between Chaguarani and the Rio Caine. All the other plants attributed to S. purpurea belong to one of the varieties or to S. torotorensis. S. purpurea v. dorana is a different species with no closer connection to S. purpurea.
