Extra Info:
Sulcorebutia steinbachii grows on almost every hill above 3000 m around Cochabamba and Colomi. It is extremely variable in shape and colour of the flowers. There are places with uniform flowers and others where any flower-colour can be found. The spination usually varies from short and adpressed to long, stiff and porrect. The colour of the spines goes from light yellow to black. Often all described variations grow together head-to-head. This is the reason why many names had been given to some of these forms.
The neotype G123/1 was deposited 1999 in the course of the emendation of Sulcorebutia by G. Hentzschel because of the missing type-material. Later a photograph of Werdermanns plant was designated as lectotype [see Eggli U. & Leuenberger B. (2008): Type specimens of Cactaceae names in the Berlin Herbarium (B) Willdenowia - De Herbario Berolinensi Notulae No.48, 38 213-280].
